Hearing the Other Side is filmmaker and social activist Naveen Qayyum's 2009 follow-up to her 2007 documentary
Talking Faith. Hearing the Other Side follows the aftermath of the assassination of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh in 2004 by a Muslim. The documentary follows the challenges young Muslims of Moroccan and Turkish origin face living in the Netherlands while asking
"Can a Muslim also be Dutch?". Other questions of identity, women's concerns, and dialogue are raised throughout the documentary as the diverse Muslim youth of the Netherlands offer insight into the scrutiny and isolation they experience on a daily basis. Dutch Muslims share their perspectives with others in the hope of being heard, and showing the rest of the world that we are more alike than we are different.
Hearing the Other Side is a documentary that highlights the importance of interfaith dialogue. However the documentary shows us that listening is equally important as talking in dialogue. As religious historian
Karen Armstrong says in the film,
"it is really important that we learn to speak to each other, it's also very important that we listen."
